iOS 26 Add to Home Screen Workflow Change

Description

  • iOS 26 has changed the layout of Safari, so there is no longer a “Share” button immediately visible. However, the Glide popup to install an app still gives the instruction of “Tap (Share Icon) then “Add to Home Screen”. It needs to be updated to “Tap (Ellipsis Icon), tap (Share Icon), “Add to Home Screen”.

How to replicate

  • Use an iPhone running iOS 26.
  • Have the “Tabs” setting for Safari set to “Compact” (the default setting).
    • The other 2 settings do display the Share Icon, but I think it probably makes the most sense to plan for most users keeping the default setting.
  • Open any app for the first time in Safari.

The solution will not be that easy as Safari has 3 different “tabs” options which causes need for multiple instruction variations.

Yes, I realize that. I’m not personally a fan of the new UI, but my priority would be to optimize for the default option which currently isn’t a great experience.

Thanks for sharing, will be difficult to optimize for differences in different versions of an OS itself.

We have an event app for a client. They have a tab guiding people how to install and I’m still not sure what’s the best option to cover all bases (Android, iOS, Desktop). Some desktop browsers don’t even have the option to install.
