When I first used the new tiles, there were subtle animations when tapping the icons that would skew the perspective a little to make it look like you were pressing it. I loved that! It seems to have gone away

hmmm, didn’t know that changed. I’m guessing the animations caused some issues when scrolling. If I recall, I had some minor hesitation with scrolling where it didn’t work smoothly.

They were deemed too distracting.

Omg no way!! I never found them distracting, I thought it looked very polished. I hope one day there might be an option to turn it on or off.

I agree. Adds a nice touch to a polished app.
Perhaps their decision was based more on functionality than “feel and look”. Most people I know are just looking to get to their data quickly. Some even turn off animations altogether as they feel it may be distracting and trivial toward the arrival of their destination.
