I’m struggling with building app instructions right into the app - It would be incredibly useful to have that little “i” icon as a component that could 1) link to a new screen or 2) display information same as in charts for example. I think we would be able to do so much with that to explain how our apps work. Right now I have to build a manual to give the Admin of customer companies and make videos for the employees. It would be fantastic to have the little “i” to do most of that throughout the experience, delivering bits of info and guidance as needed!
+1
Great idea. I have exactly the same quandary. Was about to start writing the “user guide” but just seems so 90s
Exactly - no one wants to read a manual (and they probably won’t)…they want to learn and discover the experience along the way…the right information at the right time.
Would an emoji in an Action Text component with a link to screen work? Or maybe some way with a relation and an inline list, so you could have one sheet of instructions, but drill into certain sections through the relation. I think a compact list with just the details side filled, so the is on the right hand side of the screen. There’s a few ways you could work it.
There is a show alert action in staging, but that’s used only for debugging. It would work great for little help pop-ups if it was made available on production.
Wow…I’m gonna try @Jeff_Hager! Thank you! I’m having movie night with my little 8 yr old now but I will try in the morning and report back!
I was using emojis throughout my app… then I showed a designer my app and they were like, “OMG, those emojis look horrible.” I can’t recommend emojis if you’re trying to retain a consistent aesthetic as they will change browser to browser.
An info component would be pretty rad.
Although you could also create a small “i” icon (say 25x25) on a very wide mostly transparent png (400x25) in the general theme and color of your app, align the icon to the far right or left on the png and then place that image on the screen just above the thing you want to give them info on. Make the image a link to that info screen. Even though the whole image will be clickable, users won’t click the transparent part as it will be too thin anyway. Only the small “i” icon will catch their attention. A little design slight of hand.
ugh - like the emojis change here in the community unless you select from the library. Great point! I’m a “design” first kind of person so that’s good to know. Jeff’s idea still great one - will make sure the emoji is good on most devices or do what you said, choose an “i”. Original request withstanding!
Hi,
I’d use the Jeff’s emoji along with a dropdown using Markdown. Something like this:
Saludos
What are you watching? The latest from @Robert_Petitto?
Well, I do plan to teach my 8 year old to Glide soon - so I’ll save Robert’s videos for that, but for now it’s The Sleep Over on Netflix.
I’ve used this character before too: ⓘ
I was being serious …
Btw @Robert_Petitto I just meant that my son would love your gamification videos-a total compliment. I built your 8 ball when I was learning and he is totally obsessed with it!
Oh I know! Complement recognized! And kids pick up on it first. My 12-year-old is planning to try her hand at making a couple apps. She wants to build some templates. I’m going to help her out and put them under my name probably
Seeing your will to spend time to teach your kids Glide makes my heart melt. I really do love to do so as well, but I have to get a girlfriend first.
You will get the chance at the right time in the future and I’m sure Glide will be around! #2030 right?
With the amount of time I spend in developing apps now I think my chance of getting a unicorn startup app up and running before 2030 is bigger than my chance of having a girlfriend let alone a kid
Lmao that deserves the “solution” on this thread! and I believe you are that talented that it will happen!
