I’m trying to play an audio file hosted in Google Drive but it won’t play it. What can I do?
Do you have the file publicly shared?
I do. It plays in the Glide platform but it won’t play in the app itself on the iPhone.
Would you be willing to share the link here?
I think I have heard problems with playing Google Drive files on iOS before. Should we recommend uploading straight to Glide?
That would probably be best in the long run.
How do I go about that? File picker?
Yeah that should be the way to go.
Ok. Just wanted to confirm that I could play the audio, which I could. But yeah, in general Google Drive is not suitable for hosting and streaming media.
What alternatives do I have? Can you name another platform I could use, please?
But I don’t want the user to see File Picker on the page. I’m sorry but I’m not sure how to use File Picker…
Who will upload the file? If it’s you as the admin, you can just add a file picker somewhere in your flow and set it so that only you can see it.
Hi!
How do I find the URL in which the file has been uploaded to? Could you also please recommend another File Host I could be using which is compatible with Glide?
The table itself contains the url of the file. Files are not actually located in the table. Only the URL. Depending on the type of column, you will see a url, an image, or possibly something else. When you upload to Glide’s storage, then the file is uploaded to their storage location and the URL is written to the table.
I don’t have recommendations for external storage. Glide’s storage is recommended in my opinion. You would have to do a search for other external services that are ideal for web hosting if you prefer that over Glide’s storage. Services such as Dropbox or Google Drive can work, but they are not suited for website hosting and you can run into rate limits and files just not loading in some cases.
Hey Jeff!
Thanks so much for your help but it is just not working for me. I uploaded the file but the URL is not being written anywhere. I’ve checked all the tables and it is nowhere to be found.
Can you share some screenshots or a video of what you are doing? Assuming you are using a File Picker component, do you have it pointing to the correct column? What type of column are you writing to? Are you using a Form, or did you just add the file picker to a detail screen? If you are using a form, are you submitting the form so it adds a new row to your table? Hard to say what’s going on without some more information. It should be pretty straight forward.
I’ve done it
It is pretty straight forward!
Cheers mate!
