Trying to figure out if glide is worth it

So, I am building an app. I started with the free account to see if it was worth the effort and money to upgrade or look at other options. Thus far, I have been significantly unimpressed with the AI helper, videos that don’t match the UI in the university, and my inability so even email a human (according to the AI) because I am currently on the free plan.

Here is what I think is going on.

  • I am somehow on a classic ui, through non of the classic tips and tricks match up
  • the videos in university also don’t match up
  • I am chasing my tail around
  • I have tried using other AI to help, but it always defaults to older versions and never has working solutions.
  • Between using {{ }} which doesn’t seem to work, neither does , plain text is hit or miss.

Is the free version just this bad or what? Not overly interested in paying to find out that it isn’t.

Can someone please, please, please shed a little light on this, I am cycling through getting excited and throwing my desktop through the window.

My question would be - what are you wanting to build?

If you’re wanting to build some sort of consumer App, like the next Tiktok or Instagram, then forget about Glide - it’s the wrong platform.

But if you’re wanting to solve a specific business use case - automate or eliminate some manual process, then this is the sort of thing that Glide excels at.

Have a browse through some of the Customer Stories on the Glide website. This will give you a flavour for the types of solutions that Glide is being used for.

When did you sign up? If it was within the past few months, you should be on the current free version. In the Glide Builder, have a look at the top left of the screen. If you have a Legacy Free plan, it will be indicated there.

Honestly, if you are just starting out with Glide, I would avoid AI altogether and instead spend a little time learning the basics, either from the Docs or working through the first certification level in the University.

The free version has most features, but very little in terms of integrations. It doesn’t support external data sources, you don’t get API access on the free version, and (obviously) the user/usage limits are lower than paid plans.

Glide is an incredibly powerful platform with a very active support community. Speaking as someone who has been building Glide Apps for almost 5 years now, I find it a joy to work with.

Thanks Darren. It says free. so it must be. I have been through the first. been signed up for about 3 weeks. Probably 60+ hours in. I figured out that AI wasn’t overly helpful. I appreciate the response. I will keep trying.

If you get stuck with any specific tasks, don’t hesitate to ask for help here. There are plenty of experienced Gliders around that are only too willing to share.

But again, I’d reiterate what I said earlier. Before going too far, you should evaluate whether or not Glide is the right fit for your specific use case. If you’re wanting to build any sort of consumer App, then almost certainly it is not - except maybe for an MVP/prototype.
