You’re right. You have to calculate timestamps. You have to compare a user specific timestamp to the last posts timestamp. That user specific time stamp needs to be recorded upon the user actually doing something, like clicking on that thread or entering into a detail screen. Then you create an if then else column in the database that shows either the most recent message or a notification that there are new messages and display that as the description for that collection.
