@Robert_Petitto’s solution seems to be the best and easiest in this post. Set the image column value initially when they first create their account and the column is empty (through a Set Column action on a button press of some other action performed by the user). Then they can change it later if they choose.

Allow use of 'Generate Image' fields for user profile pictures

It would be nice to allow the use of ‘Generate Image’ fields for user profile pictures, they look prettier than the default images assigned to users, not everyone wants to/can be bothered uploading their own
