You can edit the number of items displayed on the right menu of your chart (at the bottom)
Keep in mind that this limits the items, so if your graph is linked to the items tab, limiting it to 12 won’t necessarily display 12 bars, but 12 items, and them it will group them your axis criteria.

To add to your point, default page size on a bar chart is 24, it does work when I want to show 12 items.
