Discord Community for glide?

Why doesn’t Glide have a Discord server?

As a person who doesn’t use Discord much and get lost almost everytime I have to, can you tell me what Discord offers that this forum doesn’t? I’m genuinely curious, I don’t use Discord or even Slack as effectively as the forum.

The forum is definitely better for structured help and long term reference.
Discord’s more about real-time convos, quick questions, casual chats, voice chats, and screen sharing. It’s less organized, yeah, but it can build more of a “community hangout” vibe. Not saying it’s better, just different?..

Embedded voice chat and screen sharing inside the forum worried indeed be a nice feature.

What do u think? Shall we start a community there?, or change this to a feature request  @ThinhDinh

I would rather see discord as an extension to allow video group calls. I love the way the Glide Discourse forum is. And that is if no conference add-on already exists for Discourse. :slightly_smiling_face:

Not trying to replace Discourse, I actually love it. It’s great for deep, structured convo.

But Discord has 150 M+ daily active users, and tons of them are tech folks. If we want more eyes on Glide, we should be where they already hang out.

A Discord server means:

  • Faster feedback
  • Casual, real-time chats
  • More visibility
  • Easier growth

Let’s keep Discourse for long-form. But Discord could be the front door that brings more people in. Why not both?

That’s a great point, but ultimately this isn’t my call haha, I’m just a fellow user like you . I’m just curious on different perspectives.

Actually you know what? I hate Slack! I’m in to replace it with Discord :joy:

Don’t take this seriously :winking_face_with_tongue:

I’m with you on the Slack hate. It has its purpose for certain things, but everyone keeps trying to use it like a forum and that’s just not what it’s designed for. I’ll read and try to keep up with what’s in there, but for the most part it’s kind of annoying to use. No easy way to keep track of what I have or have not read. I imagine Discord would be very similar.

Personally, I’m keeping my focus in this forum because it’s a lot easier for me to track threaded conversations. I’m one of those OCD people that has to read absolutely everything.

Do you think that it would be possible to have the expert group channel in this forum with permissions?

Not completely sure. Once upon a time there used to be an expert only category, but it was short lived. I don’t remember if it was visible to everyone or just to certain users. At the very least I think only experts could comment in that category. I don’t think it got a lot of use.

I would love to see something like that here though. Something for expert communication that’s only visible to experts. I think the Slack has it’s purpose, but I also think it’s being overused.

Yes, Discord’s servers are super customizable, and u can make ur own roles and permissions. I’ve been using Discord for 10 years now, and I’m telling you that everything a community needs and more is available on Discord.

Imagine with me..
you’re stuck on something in your app, and instead of digging through posts or waiting for replies, you just see a few Glide experts hanging out in a voice channel you jump in, ask your question, maybe share your screen, and boom, solved in minutes. That kind of instant, collaborative help is what Discord could bring to the community.

This is a server for a friend of mine, he has a discord bot service and this is the support server,
a quick little peak of what very little work can do.

Do you think we have the level of activity required for something like “see a few Glide experts hanging out in a voice channel” to happen? Based on what I see in Slack, I doubt that.

There has been an attempt in the past to create a Telegram channel but it died pretty soon after that.

I still think Discord, when it’s active, moves at a much faster pace than I want to consume content. I already hate Slack for the same reason Jeff said, so maybe this is not for me. But I see your point.

I play a few games, they are on Discord, and I hate how much work I need to put in to have a real conversation in text form, or find some news.

Totally fair.

I hate Slack with a passion.

I can see the value of a casual chat tool that has features that email doesn’t offer, and in that case I think Matrix would be a far superior tool compared to Slack. A Glide-Matrix integration would be nice, though because Matrix is sadly not widely adopted it would be a waste of resources to develop such an integration.

I think a screen capture tool for screenshots or video, embedded in Discourse here in the forum, would be a wonderful add-on. Since we often use these in our discussions, it could allow forum members who are uncomfortable with screen capturing tools (me for instance) to do screen captures more easily.

That feature specifically would enhance the forum experience I feel.

For the other features you mention, Mazen, can’t we already do them here: realtime conversations, casual chat, quick questions?

As for more visibility and growth, how would Discord help? Would Glide’s community get more exposure?

I’m tagging Andy, he might be interested in this conversation. Though these days I think we find him more in pubs in London than in the forum
