Table columns don't stretch

I find myself wanting to use the table list layout in Pages often, because it’s the most compact way to display data, in terms of vertical space. However, the fact that the column widths are fixed means that my data almost always get cut off, making it a non-option. Even when only one column has data, the data get cut off and the rest is just white space. It would be nice if the table columns would collapse if without connected data, or if the table widths were adjustable.
