What is the recommendation when it comes to external database connections… just tried airtable and waited for a minute or 2 for data to come through to the app… which is to slow for my usecase. I need something that reflects updates in near realtime.

Can you give some details as to why the database needs to be external? The built in Gilde Database will be your best bet for the fastest database.
Yes, main reason is to have a client facing app. It is for online food ordering for our restaurant. Building the kitchen display on glide… but want to have various interfaces to be able to order for customers (facebook, voiceflow, telephone, mobile, website)… so figured it is easy to have the data outside of glide.
