🆕 Record & Transcribe Voice action, component

Thanks Nathanael, I thought it might be 0 as there is no mention of updates on the published info or on Glide app builder itself.

When you select the Record & Transcribe action in the workflow editor, there is no indication that it costs updates to use, unlike any of the Glide AI actions or integrations for instance.

As of writing, Record & Transcribe costs 0 updates.

Is the Glide team still actively working to fix the bugs on this feature? It would be great to see it working… I’m getting issues when using iPhone (works fine on desktop).

Have you set up user profiles?

Hey Nathan,

These are my settings… should I change anything?

When I perform a test on my Android phone:

  1. Optional user profile: it works
  2. Required user profile: it works
  3. No user profile: I get an error

When you test with settings 1 or 2 on your devices, what result do you get?

You mean these options?

I am loathed to change it since users must sign in to ensure the app knows which player is using the App… currently it’s as shown, i.e. required.

It seems that even when the users profile is set up, the Record & Transcribe Voice action might be returning an error.

Is this happening to you on all types of devices or only iPhone?

Just iPhone. Desktop PC works just fine.

According to Simon, it seems that even when the users profile is set up, the Record & Transcribe Voice action might be returning an error on iPhone. Are you seeing this too? @Rosewebstudio

It currently uses no updates in the Beta stage, but it will likely use updates once it reaches General Availability (GA)

No if user profile set up and users have to sign in it works on iPhone

Strange, I just tried again with my iPhone after the game tonight. It worked well. The only change I can think of is that I may have changed the options from automatic record to manual start.

I just added the feature to another app however it’s not working when I try using iPad or iPhone. It does work fine using desktop in the Glide builder screen but fails when using the published site in a normal browser. As you can see from the screenshot there is an error after recording the audio clip.

Important to note that this app does not require sign in. It’s a public app with every session being anonymous. It’s a real pity GLIDE cannot fix this!

The bug has been acknowledged, so I expect a fix will be forthcoming.

A few more points of feedback on this feature, since this is an active thread.

I’d like to see this function as a form screen, as I want to save audio transcripts into a separate table and relate them back to another table’s entity (a user profile with 40+ attributes). My customers have many user profiles they manage. I would like to show the interview transcripts in a collection under a designated tab on the user profile. In this use case, I’d want to write the transcript to another table as well as some values from screen, and from the user profile, as you can in a form. Those values for now would be things like the customer’s company ID (so they can later filter all interviews taking place in their company), and screen row ID (so I can relate the audio transcript back to the target profile). The form-like capability lets me write these values to another table and keep clean interfaces on my tables and UI, as multiple recordings could take place for a given user. Right now, I basically get a double-slide-in, one to show the form function, and another when the user presses the recording audio button. Happy to have a call to explain/walkthrough further.

After testing a bit, my customers would like to use audio recording on top of other work they are doing in the app, such as if they interview a client, they want to have the recorder running alongside the form screen where they update the user’s profile during the interview. This makes it infinitely more useful to them as they can perform work and interview their user at the same time, and review the transcript for specific details later. If anyone has suggestions on doing this with the existing functionality I’m keen to hear them. This is a strong requirement of my users and matches the functionality of interfaces like Zoom or other meeting recorders where the meeting can be open but the transcript runs in background.

What I was doing prior to this beta feature is the following:

  • Offer a form screen slide in with audio recording functionality
  • Saving the audio transcript manually as a form in the slide in screen
  • Auto-transcribing the conversation and summarizing with the Replicate integration and AI functionality

There are things I don’t like about the Replicate approach:

  • The recording UI takes over the screen and they cannot perform the desired edits described above (eg., it takes over the screen so they cannot keep performing work during the call).
  • Replicate costs additional money (not a dealbreaker)
  • The transcript functionality is not as good as Glide’s in this beta feature. I find that Replicate models miss words and prompt refinement does not always yield consistent results for each conversation.
  • I would prefer to use native Glide functionality.

Asking for a client:

  1. When will the cost be incurred: when the recording ends and the transcription happens, or when the user saves the transcription?

  2. If the cost is incurred when the user saves the transcription, would it be possible to add conditional saving such as number of words in the transcription or length of the recording?

One more bit to add to this from a UX perspective. It would be great if the record audio button leveraged in-place (current screen) functionality to take the audio, in which case users could accomplish other work while recording, such as taking additional notes or filling out a form. Currently if I put a Notes block on the same screen, the record audio slide-in takes over the screen and does not allow further interaction untl the recording is completed and closed.

Fellow Gliders, @nocodeandy & @djp,

We just noticed that the microphone icon that allows for recording voice input is now missing on the Transcribe Voice component. You can still type in your message but now the voice transcribe feature that worked wonderfully on phones is gone.

Was this intentional or was it removed by accident?

Thanks for reporting! It looks like the record button is now invisible for some reason. You can still click it, but it is not visible as a red dot
