# Users cannot set roles from/through the app

I would like to know why when changing a user role or adding a user role, there is a problem when editing the user role.

This is specified in the documentation.  
You can’t change a Role from the app for security reasons

It’s really interesting how there are many aspects of Glide I know in theory, others I know in practice, and these two areas form a Venn diagram: there can be overlap but not always. It might not even be a Venn, it might just be “practice is strictly included in theory” 😆

The fact that users cannot set roles through the app is one of these many aspects. In theory it sounds pretty obvious, so I never really thought twice about it. Until last week where I was working on an app where users will be requesting access to the app. This is by design in the business process, it’s meant to be so, this won’t be an edge case. I wanted the process from request access to being accepted with a role to be as smooth as possible both for the user and for the admin. And this is where I was put into practice the theory I had really never thought twice about: setting a role through the app doesn’t work.

Just to say that nothing beats putting theory into practice. As well as the infinite knowledge base of the forum. Thanks to all of those you here who are always so helpful day in and day out. 🙏
