This is what the chefs see. Chefs need not know who is getting what to eat. All they need is the total quantity of a dish that they have to cook.

In my actual use case, clients usually have 30/60/90 meals or more so there are very few cases of having lesser than 5 meals where this particular bug arises. Hence never went out of the way to rectify it. But what you suggest should be able to solve this issue.
There could be a prompt saying you have selected more than the meals you opted for. Or I could hide the options of selecting meals for lunch/brunch once they have selected 3 meals
