What action are you using for the item? Is the only action available for independent screen configuration is “View details”? I have to check this later.

Edit: Others people please correct me if I’m wrong, but is a “View details” with independent screen configuration automatically defaults to a “Details” layout? If so I don’t believeyou can do filters & sorts on it.

I don’t think in app filters and sort work in a detail view. The app wouldn’t know which inline list to apply the filter to. I would create a user specific column to hold a choice component value, so you can store free or not free. Then create a relation using that value, to the list of books. The user selection in the choice will determine what to show in the list.
